Seeking an ideal golf club
It was in 1994.
The Japanese bubble economy ended. Many business people and entrepreneurs fell into a gloomy mood, wondering how they can get out of a long dark tunnel. It was then that several members of our original founders including Ikuo Saka came back from the U.S. They met again at a golf club in Japan after a long time. One of them said the following.
I cant feel at ease at a golf club in Japan.
Why do caddies offer every sort of service in Japan while most golfers carry their clubs by themselves in the U.S.?
Why cant we play through 18 holes without spending one hour for lunch?
Do we need to build a gorgeous club house?
People who have just come back from the U.S. found a lot of differences in golf courses between the U.S. and Japan.
We want our own club. The conversation was spiced up to such a dream.
Soon the situation suddenly moved forward. -
The opportunity to create a golf course by ourselves was brought up.
We can get land for a golf course development. Unlike golf clubs in the bubble economy period we should make a solid plan in the recession period.
We thought we should develop a wholesome golf club by ourselves where we can feel at ease. The concept is very common in the U.S. and Europe, but it had never existed in Japan. Members are supposed to not only join the completed golf club but also develop the golf club itself together.
Most tasks related with the club operation are discussed, decided and implemented by members. Members power is essential to the club operation. The power consists of volunteer activities of all members who exercise their rights and duty. Many members belong to a committee to operate the club, and board members including representatives from each committee make decisions on club operation in a monthly meeting.
Our dream on the golf course development has come true, and we are making further progress. -
Strategic golf course designed by Muirhead
Desmond Muirhead (1924-2002), a world renowned designer, designed this golf course, accepting members ambition We would like to create a brand new golf club which never existed before.
Representatives of Brick & Wood Club made several requests of Muirhead in asking for the Brick & Wood golf course design. The golf course should be in harmony with nature and very strategic. In designing the golf course, the following 4 points must be paid attention to.
A. The course should be 1) easy for beginners, 2) comfortable for average golfers, 3) challenging for low-handicappers. Every type of golfers could enjoy and would like to play golf repeatedly.
B. Ponds and streams in the golf course should be beautifully in harmony with surrounding nature.
C. The disruption of nature should be minimized in cutting trees. Plants should be in harmony with nature. We would like the development and maintenance of the golf course to be economical. At the same time, the course should be beautiful.
D. The entry road from the public road to the club house should be as beautiful and economical as possible.
A distinguished master, Desmond Muirhead, fully demonstrated his talent to complete this tough golf course. How is it? That question should be answered by yourself after playing golf here.
